    University of Colorado Boulder Seeking Instructor in Arabic Language and Culture

    The Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a non-tenure-track appointment as Instructor in Arabic Language and Culture to begin August 2013.

    Requirements include:

    • At least a MA in Arabic language, pedagogy, or other related discipline
    • Ability to teach all levels of Arabic language; and experience teaching Arabic at the university level
    • Ability to teach non-languages courses in Middle Eastern and/or Arabic/Islamic cultures.

    Required Certificate: Teacher of Arabic

    The preferred start date is August 20, 2012

    Overview:
    Individuals who are eligible for or who possess Teacher of Arabic certification AND who meet the "highly qualified" teacher requirement are encouraged to apply.  All candidates must apply online.

    Qualification: Applicant must meet State of Delaware licensure and certification requirements for Teacher of World Languages: Arabic.  The State of Delaware will recognize standard certificates from all other states as a means of eligibility.  Applicants who have a major in Arabic from a Regionally Accredited U.S. College may apply as a candidate for this position through the Alternative Routes to Certification (ARTC) program. Passing PRAXIS I scores and passing ACTFL Oral and Written Proficiency scores are required for all candidates who do not currently hold a standard certificate.  Teachers who hold a current and valid teaching certificate in any other content area may qualify for this position by taking the ACTFL Oral and Written Proficiency exam.     Elementary School Arabic Teacher Position

    About the Organization
    Global Language Project (GLP) is a not-for-profit organization that partners with public elementary schools to create and fund after school language programs. At Global Language Project our goal is to build the foundation for a lifetime of language learning. Our innovative curriculum and approach meet and exceed the criteria required by Common Core Standards and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language Standards.

    About the Position
    Currently, we have the opportunity for a full-time Arabic teacher. Please note that you must be a certified teacher in order to hold this position. You must hold either a K-6 certification, common branch certification, bilingual certification, or a provisional state certification.

    The instructor will work with students in grades K-5. Through GLP’s curriculum, students are introduced to language through interactive instruction, cultural activities, music and games. The emphasis is on oral communication and learning about other cultures.

    Duties & Responsibilities:
    • Teaches students Arabic with creative and well integrated lesson plans, in both full group and small group settings
    • Communicates with supervisors, parents, students and partner schools
    • Tracks students’ progress through continued assessment
    • Effectively manages classroom
    • Enhances programs' reputation by exploring creative and innovative teaching and learning tools
    The successful candidate will demonstrate:
    • Experience with foreign language instruction and curriculum development
    • Experience working with elementary aged children
    • Experience working with students with diverse backgrounds
    • Ability to plan, implement and evaluate individual, small group, and whole class instruction
    • Excellent classroom management skills
    • Success in incorporating hands-on and co-operative learning activities

    Salary: $40,000 to $60,000 (based on experience) with benefits.

    The Arabic program at PSU’s Department of World Languages and Literatures invites applications for a one-year, full-time position teaching Arabic language, literature and culture. The position is for the academic year (fall, winter, spring). The position begins September 16, 2012 and is renewable.

    Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Arabic Language, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Literature or related field; teaching certificate in Arabic (if applicable); native or near-native fluency in both Standard/Spoken Arabic and English; high-level skills in the grammar and syntax of standard (fus-ha) Arabic; two academic years of full-time (or its equivalent) experience teaching language.
     
    Duties/Responsibilities: Teaching undergraduate courses in language for first- through third-year Standard Arabic and Commonly Spoken Arabic; developing program in collaboration with members of the Arabic section; maintaining regular office hours; Serving on departmental committees and regularly participating in departmental faculty meetings.

    UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI, Department of Modern Languages and Literatures is seeking a lecturer in Arabic, beginning in August 2012 for a full-time, non-tenure-track, nine-month position. The field of specialization is open. The successful candidate will have the ability to teach elementary through advanced Arabic language courses and upper division Arabic literature, culture, and/or linguistics courses. The ability to teach another language or broader linguistics courses is desirable. Native or near-native competence in Arabic and a solid knowledge of English is required. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses (four per semester), meeting with students during regular weekly office hours, and collaborating with the program director on course and curriculum development. 

    Qualifications include a commitment to excellence in Arabic language pedagogy, a minimum of one year of collegiate teaching experience, and a Ph.D. in Arabic or a related field in hand by July 30, 2012.

    American University’s Department of Language and Foreign Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for a full-time term faculty position in Arabic at the rank of instructor, beginning in Fall 2012.  The position may be renewable.

    The ideal candidate will be:  

    A native speaker of Arabic or someone with near-native fluency.
    Someone who has successfully taught Arabic to non-Arabic speakers for at least three years, preferably at the middle and/or high school levels.
    Skilled in the pedagogy of second language acquisition and will be adept at cultivating listening and speaking proficiency in students from the outset.

    The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations seeks applications for a preceptor in Modern Arabic beginning September 2012. The position is renewable on a yearly basis for up to eight years pending enrollments and performance.  Teaching duties will include a minimum of five courses per year.

    The successful applicant should be well versed on the issues of teaching Arabic as a foreign language, have experience in teaching all levels of Modern Standard Arabic, and must be able to conduct upper level courses in Arabic.  Knowledge of modern Arabic literature, linguistics and culture, or Arabic intellectual history is highly desirable.

    • Coordinate with the program director, curriculum specialist and other Arabic instructors in creating the curriculum plan, unit plans and daily lesson plans prior to the program start.
    • Work with other instructors to evaluate student homework assignments and results of other assessment tools.
