    Lecturer in Arabic at Johns Hopkins University

    The Center for Language Education at Johns Hopkins University invites applications for a Lecturer in Arabic beginning Spring 2017. Responsibilities of the successful candidate include teaching a maximum of three levels of all four levels of Arabic (1st year to 4th year Arabic for a total of 12 contact hours per week).

    Minimum qualifications are:

    • M.A. in Arabic Studies (with specialization in linguistics, applied linguistics or a closely related field)
    • Native or near-native fluency in Arabic and English
    • At least 3 years of experience in teaching Arabic as a foreign language at the university level.
    • Strong grounding in communicative and proficiency-oriented teaching
    • Strong computer literacy (PowerPoint, Excel, etc.).
    • Must currently be eligible to be employed in the U.S.

    The successful candidate will be expected to share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels and to the mentoring of students in their professional development.     Open Field in Arabic Literature. The successful candidate will be expected to teach general education and advanced level Arabic Studies courses and will lead our efforts in developing and promoting a minor in Arabic and Islamic Studies. The teaching load is four courses per year (2-2).

    Minimum Qualifications: Earned Ph.D. in Arabic Studies or related field in hand by May 30, 2017; primary specialization in classical Arabic literature with ability to teach a broader chronological spectrum of Arabic texts through the contemporary period; native or near native fluency in Arabic; a proven record of excellence in teaching; demonstrated potential in establishing a successful research and scholarship, and a deep commitment to promoting diversity through academic and research programs. Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable.

    Preferred Qualifications: Research and/or teaching interests in any of the following areas: Maghrebi and/or Mediterranean Studies; Judeo-Arabic culture and literature; classical antiquity and Arabic thought; medieval to early modern Arabic historiography.

    Appointment Terms: This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2017. The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Faculty may also be asked to teach at one of UConn’s regional campuses as part of their ordinary workload.     Job Summary: The Egyptian, Gulf, or Jerusalem Dialect Arabic Language & Culture Instructor II will work onsite at the School of Language Studies (SLS) at the US Department of State’s (DOS) Foreign Service Institute (FSI) in Arlington, VA. FSI provides foreign language training, testing and other language support services to DOS employees and other government agencies in over 70 foreign languages. Enrollments in the school surpass 2000 students annually including up to 1000 distance learning enrollments.

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Plan and/or conduct small and/or large group language classes using a wide variety of language teaching methodologies and techniques, stressing speaking, listening comprehension, and reading skills.
    • Participate in non-classroom activities in the Washington area as well as language immersions.
    • Collaborate with colleagues to participate in and support, on a part-time basis, the development of language training materials or SLS-relevant reference materials, including but not limited to text, audio, video, and technology-based media.
    • As needed and on a part-time basis, assist with testing for language proficiency examinations, interacting with the examinee in the instructor's native language or language in which the instructor has near-native proficiency.

    Required Qualifications:

    1. A minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching adult learners the foreign language they will be providing to FSI in a classroom setting (2 or more students).
    2. BA/BS, MA/MS, or Ph.D., or foreign equivalent degree(s) in any field.
    3. A minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching foreign language with proficiency-based or task-based curricula.
    4. A minimum of one (1) year of experience administering proficiency-based assessments (i.e., DLPT, ACTFL, OPI, etc.)
    5. A minimum English proficiency level of a 2:2 on the ILR proficiency scale.

    Additional Preferred Qualifications:

    1. BS/BA or MS/MA or foreign equivalent degree in relevant language education field preferred.
    2. Experience developing foreign language instructional materials and/or curricula preferred.
    3. Experience teaching with the communicative approach preferred.
    4. Experience incorporating a variety of educational technology in teaching preferred.
    5. Experience teaching blending learning activities valued.
    6. Experience integrating social media applications for educational purposes valued.
    7. Experience administering proficiency-based assessments valued.
    8. Experience teaching with vocabulary-based language learning materials valued.
    9. Experience delivering training targeted to needs of diplomatic community valued.

    Brandeis University, Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, invites applications for a full-time, renewable lectureship in Arabic language beginning Fall 2017.  The Department seeks a dedicated, meticulous, and passionate Arabist willing to contribute to the long-term quality, stability, and development of the Arabic program at Brandeis, particularly at the elementary and intermediate levels of instruction.  Arabic courses at Brandeis service a wide range of student interests and programs, most notably the undergraduate Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies program and Brandeis’ graduate program in Arabic and Islamic Civilizations.  The successful candidate must be able to employ an effective proficiency-based approach, including a rigorous and systematic approach to Arabic grammar.

    The Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan invites applicants for a full-time position as Coordinator and Lecturer III in Arabic Language, to begin September 1, 2017, pending final budget approval. The Coordinator will provide supervision and leadership for the faculty teaching first through third-year Arabic language. Responsibilities include 6-9 instructional hours per week, active leadership in curricular and program affairs, student advising, and supervision of program faculty (including mentorship for new faculty). This is a non-tenure-track, university-year appointment for an initial three-year period. The appointment is renewable for an additional multi-year period, contingent upon successful performance reviews.

    Required qualifications are an advanced degree (PhD strongly preferred) in Applied Linguistics and Foreign Language Teaching or equivalent, native or near-native fluency in Standard Arabic, a dialect of Arabic, and English, and extensive experience in teaching various levels of Arabic, at the postsecondary level, using a proficiency-based, communicative methodology.

    Desired qualifications include previous experience in program coordination, teacher training and materials development; OPI certification; an ability and interest in teaching advanced level courses in Arabic; experience with flipped classrooms; and experience with teaching Arabic using an integrated curriculum of fuSHa and colloquial (as currently represented by the 3rd edition of Al-Kitaab).
