Middlebury College: Part-time Teaching Assistant in Arabic

The Department of Arabic at Middlebury College seeks to hire a part-time (20 hours per week) one-year Teaching Assistant (TA) for the 2020-2021 academic year. The position starts in late August 2020 and ends in late May 2021. Superior language proficiency in both Modern Standard Arabic and English is required, and native or native-like proficiency in one Arabic dialect is strongly preferred. A BA degree is required.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Arabic faculty and students to support the academic mission of the program. The TA’s responsibilities include the following: (a) living throughout the academic year in the Arabic House with 5 undergraduate student residents where Arabic is used as the language of communication, (b) attending the almost daily Arabic language lunch tables, (c) organizing co-curricular cultural activities and Arabic movie screenings, (d) holding weekly office hours for Arabic students, and (e) occasionally substituting for Arabic instructors when they are away at conferences.

This part-time position is best suited for a recent university graduate with knowledge of basic issues related to teaching Arabic to non-native speakers and familiarity with the learning needs of learners of Arabic as a foreign language. If the hired TA is not a US citizen, he/she must enroll in, and successfully complete, a minimum of one course per semester. The TA will not be charged tuition for these courses. TAs are also covered under the College’s student health plan at no cost. TAs dine at the College’s dining halls at no cost as well.

Middlebury College uses Interfolio to collect applications electronically. Email and paper applications will not be accepted. Through Interfolio, interested applicants must submit an application letter, an updated CV, and a BA diploma. On the application letter, applicants should explicitly indicate reasons for their interest in the position as well as any relevant experience related to the job.
