Senior Lecturer in Arabic, University of Chicago

The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations (NELC) and the Humanities Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago are accepting applications for a Senior Lecturer in Arabic. This is a full-time position with a five-year renewable term, to start September 1, 2019.

The Senior Lecturer will act as the Language Program Director for Arabic, and is responsible for managing and coordinating all aspects of the Arabic language program in NELC, including the supervision of language lecturers teaching in the program who are represented by the Service Employee International Union (SEIU), and the supervision of graduate students teaching in the program as part of their PhD studies. In addition, the Senior Lecturer will serve as the departmental liaison with the University of Chicago Language Center, and in that role help the department develop strategies for curricular planning, pedagogical methods, and organization in all languages of instruction. The annual teaching load will be six language courses in Arabic, reduced to a minimum of four while serving as Program Director.

The successful candidate must be able to function at the ACTFL superior-level proficiency of Modern Standard Arabic. An advanced degree in a related discipline and extensive teaching experience at the college or post-secondary level are required. Experience developing and teaching language courses and experience in curricular implementation is required. Applicants need to demonstrate the ability to design and articulate curricula across multiple sections and level and to work effectively with faculty members. The successful candidate will be the supervisor of unionized lecturers, with responsibility for directing and evaluating their work, and, if necessary, for corrective action. The Program Director also will oversee graduate student language teachers. In addition, the Program Director will manage all pedagogical, administrative, and financial aspects of the language program, and provide pedagogical training and mentoring to language lecturers and graduate students. In addition to the evaluation of lecturers in the Arabic language program, mandated by the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Senior Lecturer in Arabic may be called upon to perform evaluation duties for lecturers in other departments. This is an annual position: successful candidates must remain engaged with the program during all four academic quarters.
