Description
The Arabic Section of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Swarthmore College invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor position in Arabic Studies, starting August 2024. Teaching expectations are four courses per year. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong track record of excellence in both research and teaching, specifically in Arabic language, literature, and culture. Additionally, they will demonstrate a profound commitment to teaching and a proven ability to foster inclusive, interdisciplinary, and cross-border educational experiences.
We encourage applications from candidates with expertise in cinematic and cultural productions addressing diverse issues in the Arab world, war narratives, refugee literature, and other significant subfields of modern and contemporary Arabic literature and culture. Successful candidates must be able to teach at all levels in our language sequence, including advanced content courses in Arabic literature and culture in the target language, as well as courses in English.

Qualifications
Essential qualifications include native or near-native proficiency in both Arabic and English, a commitment to undergraduate education, engaging classroom presence, substantial experience teaching language and literature/culture at the university level in North America, and evidence of scholarly promise. A Ph.D. is required by August 2024.
The strongest candidates will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to creative teaching and an active research program that speaks to and motivates undergraduates from diverse backgrounds.
