    The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Minnesota invites applications for a full-time Teaching Specialist (job code 9754) in Arabic to teach Arabic language courses in academic year 2023-2024 (August 28, 2023 - May 26, 2024). Teaching load is three courses per semester. This is a 100% time benefits-eligible position. The appointment is annually renewable based on need, funding, and performance.

    Required qualifications:

    • M.A. or foreign equivalent in Arabic or related field, including but not limited to Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language, Second or Foreign Language Education, or Arabic Linguistics.
    • Native or near-native fluency in Arabic.
    • Excellent verbal and written English language communication skills.
    • Minimum 1 year of experience teaching the Arabic language at the college level in the US.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead communicative, student-centered classrooms.
    • Positive evaluations from students, peers, and/or supervisors.
    • Collegiality and ability to work in a team.

    Preferred qualifications:

    • Ability to teach one or more Arabic dialects in addition to Modern Standard Arabic. Applicants with the ability to teach a North African dialect are especially encouraged to apply.
    • Experience teaching intensive language courses.
    • Demonstrated commitment to materials and course development, innovative teaching methods, integration of culture into the curriculum, and mentoring students.

    Responsibilities:

    1. Teach undergraduate courses as needed, conditional on qualifications.
    2. Participate in relevant unit/department meetings.
    3. Assist with development and administration of tests.
    4. Engage in professional development activities.

    Performance standards:

    1. Positive evaluations from students, Teaching Assistants (if appropriate), peers, and supervisors.
    2. Demonstration of commitment to quality teaching, teamwork, program development, and professional development.
    3. Effective handling of student inquiries.
