    Dean’s Post-doctoral Language House Fellow

    The Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at Florida State University invites applications for a two-year Dean’s Postdoctoral Language House Fellow beginning August 2023. The main responsibility of the Fellow will be to serve as a leader for the Arabic language house, assist with student placement, conduct language assessment, and coordinate Arabic language cultural events or other program-specific duties.

    Applicants with training in Arabic and cultural studies, second language pedagogy, and/or assessment, second language acquisition, or familiarity with ACTFL proficiency guidelines or with OPI and other types of assessment, are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate is expected to be competent in the use of instructional technology and communicative, proficiency-based, teaching methodologies.

    The Postdoctoral fellow is expected to teach one course per semester in the Arabic program, and to collaborate with the faculty in FSU’s BA Program in Middle Eastern Studies. Postdoctoral Fellows also work on their own research while contributing to Program development.

    Responsibilities related to the Language House include, but are not limited to, planning and overseeing extra-curricular activities, organizing special events (such as language days, film nights, and conversation tables), promoting the language house through flyers and informational sessions, designing a 1-credit-hour course for students participating in the language house, and overseeing student progress in the target language.

    Required qualifications include native or near-native fluency in both Arabic and English; the ability to teach colloquial Arabic courses, preferably Levantine; effective communication skills; a proven ability to be flexible, creative, and collaborative with students and a proven ability to create an inclusive learning space.

    Qualifications

    Eligibility is restricted to applicants who received their Ph.D. between July 31, 2019 and August 30, 2023 and do not hold concurrent employment at another institution.
