AU Arabic Language Summer Intensive Program 2012
Complete a year of Arabic study in 12 weeks
 
The Department of Language and Foreign Studies at American University in Washington DC is offering three levels of Modern Standard Arabic during the summer 2012 session.  Students will have the opportunity to complete a year of academic study of Arabic in 12 weeks during the summer 2012 session.  Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced Arabic courses will be offered three evenings per week for 12 weeks.   A Levantine Colloquial Arabic class will also be offered separately.  For more information please contact the Department of Language and Foreign Studies at 202-885-2381 or lfs@american.edu.
 
Summer 2012 Arabic Courses at American University  
 
ARAB-196 Intensive Elementary Modern Standard Arabic
 
Introduction to Modern Standard Arabic covering its phonology and script, its basic morphology
and syntax. The focus is on the development of the reading, speaking, listening, and writing
skills, while creating a basic vocabulary. This intensive course covers the material taught during
the fall and spring semesters.
10 credits, May 21-August 9, MWTH 5:30-9:15pm
 
ARAB-296 Intensive Intermediate Modern Standard Arabic
 
The goal of this course is to make students familiar with new elements of Modern Standard
Arabic grammar, to further develop their reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills, while
expanding the vocabulary. This intensive course covers the material taught during the fall and
spring semesters. Prerequisite: ARAB-103 or equivalent.
10 credits, May 21-August 9, MWTH 5:30-9:15pm
 
ARAB-296 Intensive Levantine Colloquial Arabic
 
This course introduces students to Levantine Colloquial Arabic, focusing on the development of speaking and listening skills in the Palestinian dialect, while building proficiency in the fundamental grammatical structures of the language. Given its central geographic location, the Palestinian dialect (closely related to the Syrian, Lebanese, and Jordanian dialects) is understood throughout the Arabic-speaking Middle East. Prerequisite: ARAB-203 or equivalent.
8 credits, May 21-August 9, MWTH 5:30-8:30pm
 
ARAB-396 Intensive Advanced Modern Standard Arabic
 
This course introduces students to more advanced Modern Standard Arabic grammar and
significantly expands their vocabulary. The focus is on solidification and improvement of the
reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills, while learning on Arab institutions, ideas, and
history. This intensive course covers the material taught during the fall and spring semesters.
Prerequisite: ARAB-203 or equivalent.
8 credits, May 21-August 9, MWTH 5:30-8:30pm
