Swarthmore College, Arabic Language & Literature, Assistant Professor

Swarthmore College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Arabic Language and Literature at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in August, 2019. We seek candidates specializing in Arabic Language and Literature with a focus on Arabic literature in diaspora, modern Arabic poetry, the Arabic novel, or another relevant sub-field.  Secondary specialization(s) may include Comparative Literature, Gender and Sexuality Studies, or Language Pedagogy. The successful candidate must have PhD in hand by August 2019; a demonstrated commitment to and experience teaching language and literature to undergraduates in North America; native or near-native knowledge of Arabic and English; the ability to teach Modern Standard Arabic at all levels; and evidence of scholarly engagement and excellence.

Swarthmore College participates with Bryn Mawr College and Haverford College in a Tri-College Arabic program. The Arabic Program at Swarthmore is part of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures; faculty contribute to the programs in Comparative Literature and Islamic Studies, as well as other interdisciplinary programs at the College.

 

Candidates should submit a dossier including: a cover letter, CV, graduate transcript, three letters of recommendation, a writing sample of at least 10 pages (but not more than 40 pages), and a statement of teaching philosophy (1-2 pages) via Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/54583. Professor Sibelan Forrester is Head of the search committee.
