University of California - San Diego, Temporary Lecturer in Arabic, Department of Linguistics

The Department of Linguistics at the University of California, San Diego is committed to building an excellent and diverse faculty, staff, and student body, and invites applications from candidates whose experience has prepared them to contribute to our commitment. The department currently has an open position for a lecturer in Arabic within the department’s Linguistic Language Program (LLP). The successful applicant will design course syllabi, prepare all course materials (including exams), attend weekly LLP meetings during the academic year and the annual LLP fall workshop prior to the start of classes in September, and be responsible for all instruction and grading in assigned courses. Candidates should have native or near-native ability in Arabic, very good command of English, and excellent knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic (both spoken and written) and at least one colloquial variety. Candidates should also have outstanding teaching qualifications, a vocabulary and knowledge of grammar in Arabic equivalent to that of a university-educated speaker, a deep familiarity with the cultures where Arabic is spoken, an ability to serve as a model for students by speaking clearly and intelligibly in the classroom, an ability to function effectively with other instructors in a team situation, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity. Formal training in linguistics and/or language teaching is highly desirable but not required. The candidate must hold at least a B.A. (or equivalent) degree. Initial appointments will likely be on a part-time basis beginning Fall 2014, with possible extension to subsequent quarters.

Salary: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on the University of California pay scales.
